There’s something pretty special about watching something grow.
A seed you tucked into the dirt. A garden that started with a few raised beds. A tiny colony of bees that somehow turns sunshine and flowers into honey. Or even an idea that you weren’t quite sure what to do with yet.
That’s a little bit of what The Freckled Honey Bee has been for me.
It started small. A love of gardening, getting my hands dirty, growing things, keeping bees, and learning how to make more of the things we use at home myself. Somewhere along the way, all of those little pieces started coming together.
And The Freckled Honey Bee Farm Company began to grow.
A Little Bit About Me
Hi, I’m Kelly.
I’m a mom, beekeeper, gardener, maker, and the person behind The Freckled Honey Bee.
Most days around here aren’t particularly glamorous. There are weeds that need pulling, bees that don’t always cooperate, something growing on the kitchen counter, garden dirt tracked into the house, and usually another project I’ve decided I absolutely need to start.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’ve fallen in love with creating a life that feels a little slower, a little simpler, and a lot more connected to where things come from.
I want my girls to know what it feels like to pull something from the garden and bring it inside for dinner. I want them to understand why bees matter. I want them to see that you can learn to make things yourself, even if you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing when you start.
Because, truthfully, that’s how a lot of this started.
I just started.
From the Hive
Beekeeping has become one of my favorite parts of this life.
There is something humbling about opening a hive and seeing thousands of bees working together. Every bee has a job. Everything has a purpose. And no matter how many times I inspect a hive, I still find myself stopping just to watch them.
I’ve learned a lot from my bees.
I’ve also learned that they apparently haven’t read any of the same beekeeping books I have.
They swarm when you don’t want them to. Build where you don’t expect them to. And occasionally make you question everything you thought you knew.
But that’s part of the fun.
Around here, we’re still learning—and I hope we always are.
From the Garden
The garden is another big piece of The Freckled Honey Bee.
I grow vegetables, flowers, herbs, lavender and whatever else I can find room for.
Some of it ends up on our dinner table. Some gets dried and tucked away for later. Some becomes part of the things I make. And plenty of it gets eaten by bugs before I ever get the chance.
That’s real gardening.
I’m especially drawn to growing things that are useful—lavender, herbs, vegetables, flowers for the bees and plants that can become something else after they’re harvested.
There is an incredible satisfaction in looking at something and thinking:
I grew that.
Handmade Doesn’t Mean Perfect
One thing you’ll probably notice about The Freckled Honey Bee is that I love making things.
Soap. Body products. Candles. Things for the home. Things from the garden.
I like knowing what’s in the products we’re using, and I love taking simple ingredients and turning them into something beautiful and useful.
Everything doesn’t come out looking exactly the same.
And I actually like that.
Small batch means there may be tiny differences from one batch to another. Homegrown lavender doesn’t look like something manufactured in a factory. Handmade soap might have its own little personality.
To me, that’s part of what makes these things special.
Someone grew it.
Someone harvested it.
Someone made it.
Someone cared about it.
So, What’s This Blog Going to Be About?
A little bit of everything happening around The Freckled Honey Bee.
I’ll share what I’m learning about beekeeping, what’s growing in the garden, seasonal projects around the farm, recipes, homemade products, things I’m trying, things that worked—and probably a few things that absolutely did not.
I don’t want this to be a place where everything looks perfect.
I’d rather it be a place where you can learn alongside me.
Maybe you’ve always wanted a garden but don’t know where to start.
Maybe you’re fascinated by honey bees.
Maybe you want to learn how to grow lavender.
Maybe you’re trying to make your home a little simpler.
Or maybe you just like pretty gardens, farmhouse things and watching somebody else open a box containing 40,000 bees.

A Dream Taking Root
The Freckled Honey Bee is still growing.
And that’s probably my favorite part.
I don’t know exactly what this little business and farm will look like five years from now. I have plenty of ideas—probably too many ideas, if we’re being honest.
But I know what I want it to feel like.
Simple.
Useful.
Beautiful.
Homegrown.
And filled with things made with care.
So this is the beginning of something new for The Freckled Honey Bee—and I’m really glad you’re here for it.
